Bobby Murcer, RIP

Posted in Baseball at 5:03 pm

Bobby Murcer, a five time All-Star — four times as a Yankee, once as a member of the SF Giants — and longtime Yankee broadcaster has passed away after a battle with brain cancer.   Bill Madden’s obituary can be found here.

I only had a handful of friends who were Yankee fans while growing up, but I’m not sure I can remember a swap more moaned about than the trade that sent Murcer to Candlestick Park and very briefly had Bobby Bonds wearing pinstripes.  The Danny Cater-Sparky Lyle trade came close, however, that was a different set of moaners.

I was a young Yankee fan who was devastated by the Murcer trade. When he came back, and won that game on the day of Thurm’s burial, a game I was at as a 16 year-old, it was the greatest single thrill I’ve ever had as a fan at a game. He will be missed.

One of the very few Yankees announcers that I actually liked. Him and Jim Kaat…that’s it. RIP.
