Questionable Crime Named After Calvin KleinFrom the Bergen Record's Richard Cowen :
A Clifton man who faces up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted of running onto the field during a New York Mets game at Shea Stadium had his case adjourned until Aug. 4 in Queens District Court. John McCarthy, 38, is the first person to be prosecuted under New York City's "Calvin Klein" law, which offers stiff penalties for anyone convicted of the offense of interfering with a professional sporting event. The statute was named for the famed fashion designer after a bizarre incident in December 2002, when an agitated Klein walked onto the court during a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and interrupted play. ![]() (Spree, clearly weary of guys claiming to be PJ Carlesimo's boyfriend) McCarthy is accused of running onto the field on May 4 and holding up a sign addressing radio shock-jock Howard Stern. McCarthy denies the charge and says that he was pushed onto the field by fans who were chasing a foul ball that rolled down the right-field foul line. I do hope for McCarthy's sake that he gets off with a small fine and/or public service, because it could get a little uncomfortable when his fellow inmates find out what he did. Trust me, you don't want to know what they do to guys in prison who break the Calvin Klein law. Posted: Fri - June 18, 2004 at 06:00 PM |
