The Letter U And The Number 2U2's rush-released digital single "Vertigo" is a
funny assortment of rock/bluster mannerisms that seems almost interchangeable
with the band's best known hits (save for their mid-period disco excursions).
Not half as interesting as the Walkmen's "Little House Of Savages" (which
could very well be the best U2 song ever recorded) but not entirely rotten,
either.
![]() Of course, in a better world, American Music Club's Vudi (foreground, above),also late of the Swans, would be as beloved a guitar icon as the Edge. AMC's first album in billions of years, 'Love Songs For Patriots' (Merge) is a far darker affair than U2's latest, and plumbs emotional depths more commonly associated with waking up in the wrong place than, uh, the Super Bowl halftime show. And I've got nothing against the Super Bowl halftime show (though I do hope Mark Eitzel reimburses CBS the half million bucks after that stunt he pulled). The only real question posed by "Vertigo" is which major league sports entity will co-opt this sure-thing smash for a highlights package of some sort? Given that U2's "Beautiful Day" didn't do any favors for ITV's "The Premiership" (since reverted back to BBC1 and "Match Of The Day") nor the WWE's footage of Triple H's knee surgery and subsequent rehab, might I suggest the CHL?
