Lisa Simpson's Revenge

From the AP:

A diary written by Lisa Simpson, whose lawsuit against the University of Colorado triggered the football recruiting scandal, describes how she wanted to "ruin" the lives of several football players.

Simpson wrote about the football players she believes were present during what she describes as a gang rape at an off-campus party in 2001 that was attended by football players and recruits.

During a deposition in Simpson's lawsuit, Boulder County District Attorney Mary Keenan said she believes the CU football program uses sex and alcohol to entice recruits. Her comments touched off a public furor when they were made public in January, prompting investigations into the school's recruiting practices.

The diary entries were part of Simpson's deposition, a copy of which was obtained by the Rocky Mountain News. Earlier copies of the deposition released by the university had those portions blacked out.

"I know that I probably should not take so much pleasure in this, but I am happy to know that some of my pain is now being felt by these boys," Simpson wrote in her diary. "God help me, I will ruin the lives of (five specific players), and whoever the recruits are."

CU lawyer Kay Rice questioned her about the entries last year, and Simpson said she was very angry.

"And my journal was a very private place for me where I thought I could release all of my most personal inner feelings, and when I'm feeling emotional, they just come out...," Simpson said, during her Dec. 12, 2003, deposition.

The diary wasn't supposed to be public, Simpson's lawyer said.

Much as Colorado apologists will want to spin this story in their favor, the desire for revenge seems pretty justified in this case. So she wanted to "ruin their lives"? What's a gang rape victim supposed to do, buy season tickets?

(the mere use of the above illustration should not suggest a cavalier attitude on the part of CSTB towards the serious issue of sexual assault).

In a completely unrelated story, Yeardly Smith, the voice of the other Lisa Simpson, has a new one-woman play that reveals her personal experiences with bulimia and depression.
