Tuna, Seau And Their Magic Behind The Mikefrom ESPN.com :
Bill Parcells apologized Monday for calling the suprise plays used in practice "Jap plays," saying the remark was inappropriate. ![]() The Dallas Cowboys coach was talking to reporters at the team's minicamp about how his quarterbacks coach and defensive coordinator try to outdo each other when he made the comment, perhaps a reference to Japan's 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "You've got to keep an eye on those two, because they're going to try to get the upper hand," Parcells said about quarterbacks coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. "Mike wants the defense to do well, and Sean, he's going to have a few ... no disrespect for the Orientals, but what we call Jap plays. OK. Surprise things." After a murmur in the room of reporters, which included a Japanese journalist, Parcells repeated, "No disrespect to anyone." No word on whether or not Parcells ever likens Quincy Carter's deep passes to atomic bombs, presumably because Carter can't throw that far. From the AP (last week) : Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau apologized Thursday for using a derogatory term for gays while describing his relationship with his teammates. Seau was accepting the Dolphins' leadership award at the team's annual banquet Wednesday night when he made the remark. "A joke that came out last night, due to my stupidity, is something we have to deal with today," Seau said Thursday at the team's practice facility. "With that, I am very sad and I apologize." During his speech at the banquet, Seau said: "We are a unit that cares. . . . I would say love and everybody would say, 'You're a faggot,' but I'm not." I've watched the tape of Seau's speech and I really think he needs a new writer. Besides the obvious homophobia, this is a joke with no punch line. It really makes no sense. I've even tried to imagine a rimshot at the end and it still doesn't work. Posted: Tue - June 8, 2004 at 12:25 PM |
