Jock Rapists Get Off EasyFrom Newsday
:
Two of the three Mepham High School players who admitted to sexually abusing younger teammates in a training camp near here will remain in Pennsylvania juvenile facilities with the third receiving probation, according to relatives of the victims and sources familiar with the proceedings. One of the players was sent back to the same diagnostic center where he is being evaluated and the other enrolled in a stringent boot camp program, with a review for both scheduled in four months. All three of the boys will be required to perform 100 hours of community service and will not be permitted to return to Mepham High School. George Newman of Philadelphia, the attorney for the older player, declined to comment about the proceedings but commended Wayne County President Judge Robert J. Conway who presided over the hearings. "I think that Judge Conway is a very thoughtful, decent judge. I think he does what's appropriate and is not swayed by public pressure and I am very appreciative of that." An aunt of one of the victims, who wished only to be identified as Sue, said she was resigned. "The fact that they are going to do time out of [New York] state is great, but it needs to be a lengthy time." She added, "This is an absolute joke compared to what they [the victims] have to deal with." The three varsity players - two juniors and a senior - were charged as juveniles in October for sodomizing three younger teammates in August with pinecones, broomsticks and golf balls during a five-day training camp in Preston Park, Pa. ![]() (most persons would associate the practice of institutionalized sexual torture by their school's footballers as something to be ashamed of, but not the hardy types shown above).
