HELTON, WILSON ON THE BLOCKScuttlebutt out of Denver (at last, "scuttlebutt"
in a CSTB entry) is that the Rockies are eager to move Todd Helton ($130 million
over the next eight years) and Preston Wilson ($21.5 million over the next
2). Though both players have put up sick numbers, there is some
question whether either or both will come back to earth if they play fewer than
81 games at Coors Field.
The Rockies are also on the hook for crazy money to Denny Neagle (probably rehabbing all of next year), Mike Hampton (now pitching for Atlanta), aging Larry Walker and the fading Charles Johnson. Even if Wilson doesn't come close to his 2003 production (43 doubles, 36 HR's, 141 RBI, .880 OPS), he's a guy the Mets would love to have back. But not at his present salary.
