Angels Sign Guillen, Red Sox Get Bellhorn From RockiesAnaheim have
signed free agent OF Jose Guillen to a two year, $6 million deal.
According to Guillen, anyway. The Mets' search for a right-fielder continues
and I wasn't throwing Jay Payton's name around just to annoy you --- it could
happen.
Boston have traded a player to be named later to the Rockies in exchange for 2B Mark Bellhorn. On the same day the Indians rescinded their offer to former Sox 2B Todd Walker, Boston have acquired a 29 year old, career .230 hitter with 106 RBI's in 371 games, 36 home runs in 1017 at bats. In other words, Bellhorn was cheaper or more attractive to Boston than Roberto Alomar (certainly the former, probably the latter as well). Seattle have swapped second basemen with Cleveland, sending Carlos Guillen to the Tribe in exchange for former Gold Glove 2B Omar Vizquel. On the Manny/A-Rod/Nomar love triangle front, The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes reports that Alex Rodriguez and Red Sox GM Theo Epstein met Tuesday with MLB officials and representatives of the MLBPA. Supposedly, the crux of the matter is Boston's wish to restructure A-Rod's contract. Though the union would oppose A-Rod leaving money on the table, a number of writers are saying said body will approve a revised deal as long as there is some tangible benefit for the player. Though I'd think there's a tangible benefit to not being in last place when it's 130 degrees during August in Arlington, I'm sure these brilliant minds will come up with something (does letting the SS call the pitches qualify?)
