Don't Call Him Free-Spending Fred

Not this year.

Flushing Local has some sobering thoughts amidst the Kazuo Matsui hoopla, namely, how much loot, if any, does Jim Duquette still have to find a closer or multiple outfielders? Based on the numbers quoted in the Daily News, not much.

If Wilpon actually thinks he can sign Matsui and call it a day, then how does he think the Mets will be "playing meaningful games in September," their alleged goal for 2004? Is he so shellshocked about overspending on a broken down Mo Vaughn that he can't see the wisdom of going after Guerrero, a 27 year old who has a DiMaggio-like career stretching out before him? Or, even more modestly, how about getting actual, competent first-string major league hitters and fielders in the outfield?
