Mets Pursuit Of Guerrero Continues

Despite reports earlier this week that the Orioles were close to signing OF Vladimir Guerrero, David Lennon writes in today's Newsday that the Mets' not-so-little, not-too-late offer might bring the game's top free agent to Flushing.

The Mets, sensing Guerrero has cooled on the Orioles, seized the opportunity to make their own offer yesterday. They pitched a three-year deal worth slightly more than $30 million that with incetives could raise the total package to roughly $40 million, according to a person familiar with the situation.

A source indicated last night that the pursuit of Guerrero is now a two team race between the Orioles and Mets.

(when Vlad does move south of the border, he'll notice the difference in child labor laws)

Though I have no idea how this will play out, if the Mets manage to pull this one off, post-season contention in 2004 or 5 is no longer a pipe dream. With new additions including Kazuo Matsui, Mike Cameron and Braden Looper, plus the hope that Mike Piazza will be healthy all year, the club seem to be making moves towards respectability, but an acquisition like Guerrero would change the level of expectation, and deservedly so.
