Mets To Eat Cedeno's Salary?

I've had a lot of experience trying to flog crap on eBay that no one wants. A scratched DVD of "Any Given Sunday". Metallica's 'St. Anger'. A promotional copy of Dave Navarro's award-winning autobiography, "Trust No One". So I can relate to the frustration of Mets GM Jim Duquette and his inability to find anyone who will take on Roger Cedeno and his $10 million contract.

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record writes :

The Mets' efforts to trade Roger Cedeno have been virtually exhausted, and club officials now are urging owner Fred Wilpon to give the outfielder his unconditional release.

No upper-level decision has been made, according to a major league executive, but the mere suggestion of swallowing $10 million in remaining salaries reflects GM Jim Duquette's exasperation in moving Cedeno's albatross-contract.

Without any other negotiating fronts available to them, Met officials are now hoping Wilpon will agree with Duquette that releasing Cedeno would be "addition by subtraction," said one source, even if it means relying solely on Timo Perez as the everyday right fielder in 2004.

"Roger is a nice guy and everyone likes him personally, but he cannot be on this team," the source said. "There's nothing [the Mets] can do with him. He can't even bunt."
