SHEFFIELD SIGNS, FLASH ON DECK?

Milwaukee will manage to get rid of their best player, one way or another

ESPN.com reports that OF Gary Sheffield has agreed to the Yankees' 3 year offer worth somewhere between $36 and $38 million. The same outlet claims reliever Tom Gordon is on the brink of signing a two-year, $7 million deal. Gordon, who was said to prefer closing, would function as set up man for Mariano Rivera. If this goes through, it would be a bit of a set back for the Cubs, Mets or D-Rays, all of whom were considering Gordon as their closer for 2004, as well as the Phillies whom reportedly hoped to have Gordon's appearances seque into Billy Wagner.

Last week, the Brewers' 1B Richie Sexson was rumoured to be part of the Arizona/Boston Curt Schilling deal, and it looks as though he will be, in a roundabout way. ESPN and a Chicago radio station are reporting seperate deals in which

a - the radio station version : Sexson joins the Diamondbacks in exchange for Craig Counsel, Lyle Overbay, Junior Spivey and lefty Chris Capuno.

b- ESPN's version : Milwaukee trades Sexson for Counsel, Overbay, and Jorge De La Rosa (who was shipped to Phoenix by Boston as part of the Schilling deal).

The Diamondbacks and Brewers are both denying the former trade, though the latter might bear water considering reports that said trade cannot take place until Schilling passes his physical with Boston.
