Awesome Promo Tee Is Slim Consolation For Brutal BeatingAs reward for suffering through today's pounding at the hands of L.A. and Robin
Ventura (career grand slam number 17 served up by Kris Benson in the
third inning), those attending today's Mets/Dodgers game were given the item
below to commemorate Jewish Heritage Day.
![]() Yesterday, you'll recall that Art Howe chose to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day 24 hours early, by refusing to intentionally walk Adrian Beltre as a sign of respect to Shawn Green on the Sabbath. Though I was pretty steamed yesterday, I've since come to understand that Howe is a deeply sensitive man with great regard for most major religions. Except perhaps, this one. Trailing 8-1, Richard Hidalgo tried to stretch a single into a double and was gunned down by Milton Bradley, who played the ball off the left-field wall nicely. A couple of obvious thoughts : 1) Milton Bradley has looked pretty good in LF during this series. 2) Is there another team in the majors with as poor a grasp of the fundamentals as the New York Mets? Earlier in the week, Cliff Floyd was thrown out trying for a double with the Mets facing a 4 run deficit in the 9th inning against the Padres. In the 6th inning yesterday against LA, with runners on first and 2nd and nobody out, Floyd swung at a 3-0 pitch and popped it up. I hate to dump on Floyd and Hidalgo as neither is even close to being the team's biggest disappointment, but where are their heads at? WFAN's Gary Cohen notes that with today's mop up assignment in the 7th (his third such appearance of the week), "John Franco is working his way back into the mix". Though it would be a massive stretch for me to claim that Howe's usage of the 44 year old captain on Jewish Heritage Day qualfies as an act of anti-semitism, hey, if that's what it takes to finish either man's tenure in Flushing, I'm not above doing so.
