Lawton's Jewels

The Cleveland Indians' Matt Lawton was robbed to the tune of $117,000 in jewelry and other items over the weekend.

Lawton called police Sunday morning after returning from a trip to Atlantic City, N.J., to report the theft of jewelry and other personal items from his room at the Ritz-Carlton.

Reported missing was a Gucci bag containing a diamond Rolex watch, a diamond bracelet, a platinum necklace and an MP3 player and speakers, Philadelphia police Inspector William Colarulo said Monday.

``Only me, man. It would only happen to me,'' Lawton said. ``It lets you know you're never safe. You think your stuff should be pretty secure. But you've got to keep your guard up all the time, whether that means putting stuff in the hotel safe or whatever.''

It's nice to know that a guy barely hanging on to his baseball career can afford to travel with $117,000 worth of baubles in his possession. I mean, I know how important it is for a guy like Lawton to look his best during spring training, but maybe can get by in the future with say, $50,000 worth of ice in his travel kit?
