BOBBY V. GETS THE CALL

long-distance, that is.

As predicted in many quarters, Bobby Valentine has accepted an offer to return to the Lotte Marines, the Japanese team he managed in 1995.

(smart guys always read the fine print)

While Valentine's supposedly acerbic personality (or at the very least his reputation) has eliminated him from consideration for managerial openings in Baltimore, Boston or Chicago, there is at least one organizatiion that might be eager to keep him on American soil : ESPN. According to a Steve Zipay article in Newsday dated June 29 of this year, "Valentine's three-year deal with ESPN has an unusual clause that penalizes him if he breaks the contract to manage again."

No word on what this penalty might be, but I would guess that if Valentine wants the "Playmakers" DVD box set, he'll have to buy his own.
