DePodesta Named Dodger G.M.

LA's new owner Frank McCourt was denied permission to interview Oakland's Billy Beane for the Dodgers' General Manager position...so he's settled for second best, apparently. Beane's assistant since 1998 Paul DePodesta, 31, is the new GM in Los Angeles, and the 2nd youngest guy to hold such a title in the bigs (Boston's Theo Epstein is 28).

DePodesta is a Harvard graduate with an economics degree --- his reputation as partial architect of the thrifty Oakland prototype (ie. focusing on the numbers more than hunches, empowering dudes with laptops and and pissing off old school scouting fucks) pust him squarely amongst Beane, Epstein and Toronto's JP Riccardi in the stat-happy brigade. Which is a wild generalization of course, but if you want reasoned analysis, there are loads of better places to find it.
