Phillies After Leyland?

ESPN is reporting that Philadelphia are awaiting permission from the Cardinals to interview St. Louis scout Jim Leyland for their managerial vacancy. Lelyand, who skippered the Marlins to a World Series victory in ''97, also had great success with the Pirates of the early '90's, as well as cashing some big checks while running the '98 Rockies.

Though the Mets' job opening remains a concern here at CSTB, If the Phillies want Leyland, they can have him. He played the martyr when the Pirates lost their core talent to free agency, then pulled a similar routine when Wayne Huzinga engineered the Miami fire sale of 1998. Were it not for Eric Gregg's insanely wide strike zone in Game 5 of the '97 NLCS, Leyland probably wouldn't have won a championship, and his record during his final two years managing was a staggering 116-198. Leyland will be 61 on opening day 2005...and doesn't look a day under 70.
