Phillies After Leyland?ESPN is reporting that Philadelphia are awaiting
permission from the Cardinals to interview St. Louis scout Jim Leyland for their
managerial vacancy. Lelyand, who skippered the Marlins to a World Series
victory in ''97, also had great success with the Pirates of the early '90's, as
well as cashing some big checks while running the '98 Rockies.
![]() Though the Mets' job opening remains a concern here at CSTB, If the Phillies want Leyland, they can have him. He played the martyr when the Pirates lost their core talent to free agency, then pulled a similar routine when Wayne Huzinga engineered the Miami fire sale of 1998. Were it not for Eric Gregg's insanely wide strike zone in Game 5 of the '97 NLCS, Leyland probably wouldn't have won a championship, and his record during his final two years managing was a staggering 116-198. Leyland will be 61 on opening day 2005...and doesn't look a day under 70. Posted: Tue - October 26, 2004 at 09:57 PM |
