Dibble Dabbles In Deadly DiscourseRob Dibble paid homage to Joe Torre as a superior
strategist on Friday's "Baseball Tonight", citing the Yankee manager's ability
to have the right guys available in the right spots. Dibs offered the example
of big post-season home runs hit by unlikely characters like Scott Brosius, or
more recently Aaron Boone.
Though I have no problem with Torre being praised, I don't think it requires much strategic brilliance to leave your starting 3rd baseman in the game and allow him to hit for himself. Karl Ravich wondered aloud if Torre deserved so much credit, given the Yankees' tremendous resources. Dibble replied that one of Torre's great strengths was getting the most of out of role players, "like Enrique Wilson...or Bubba Trammel coming off the bench." That's the same Bubba Trammell that went AWOL last year and ended up suing New York for back wages. I suppose you have to hand it to Joe that he didn't attempt to start a guy who was no longer on his roster. For those of you who have the same reaction that I do every time Mr. Dibble starts talking (ie. a desperate search for the remote control, switch for the fuse box or failing all of the above, a revolver), take heart. "Baseball Tonight" will feature sage commentary this year from a man every bit Dibble's equal when it comes to saying the first thing that pops into his skull, John Kruk.
