You don’t have to be a veteran broadcaster to use Yu Darvish’s brush with immortality as an excuse to express the first dopey thought that popped into your head….but it helps. Alan Ashby’s apology, courtesy MLB.com :
Astros broadcaster Alan Ashby issued an apology Wednesday for what he had intended to be a lighthearted remark in the excitement of Tuesday night’s near-perfect game by Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish in Houston.
“I’d like to apologize if my comments last night were misinterpreted or construed as insensitive. I have the highest respect for Yu Darvish; he’s a great player and his performance last night was outstanding. He showed a great deal of poise in the face of a difficult moment last night, which speaks to the strength of his character.”
Lest anyone believe this is a big deal over not-very-much, you’ll note that MLB Advanced Media has edited their clip of the CSN Houston feed so that it ends before the offending remarks are heard.
Well, at least the coach didn’t throw a baseball at his head and call him a “f***ing fairy!” That would’ve been much more offensive.
That would’ve been quite the reaction to an 8.2 IP, scoreless performance. Maybe next time?
