All-American Basketball Alliance : One Hell Of A Way To Keep Scalabrine Employed Into His 40′s

(finally, some job security)

While I have a sneaking suspicion news reports of the Whites-only All American Basketball Alliance will prove to be as legitimate as Alan Abel’s Ku Klux Klan Symphony Orchestra, for the time being, let’s have a fish-meet-barrel laugh at the following item from the Augusta Chronicle’s Billy Byler :

Don “Moose” Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league’s roster restrictions is not racism.

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.”

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of “street-ball” played by “people of color.” He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas’ indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans’ dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

The Atlanta-based league, which will operate as a single-entity owning all of its teams, is looking for local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a “licensee” in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town.

Agreed this has to be a hoax, the positioning is so ludicrous on its face. The news coverage links are each dated Jan 19, did the actual announcement really come on MLK Day? Sure, no race baiting intent….

  2. yeah says:

  3. GC says:

Greenberg, if you’re gonna continue with these offensive posts, the least you can do is sign your name

  4. Rog says:

If the requirement is to watch low-scoring, incompetent basketball then fans of this proposed new league should just watch the Clippers.

  5. Bez says:

Sounds interesting…my main complaint with the NBA has always been all the crotch grabbing.

  6. Sarcasm says:

Finally, a level playing field for the white man.

  7. Whitey says:

This would be a step forward for our society. Clean the filth out of the game and restore respectability to athletics. Enough of these knuckledraggers.

  8. Lee says:

After going to the first link and reading the news story the first thing that jumps out at me (other than feeling appauled) is that Don ‘Moose’ Lewis says the league is for “Only players that are natural born American citizens with both parents of Caucasian race…” and then goes on to point to Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, neither of whom are born in the US, as his examples….what an idiot

  9. Kenny says:

What a wimp……Let him start his racist league. Hopefully he runs himself to death before the season ends and I can buy out his league and rename it (AMBA) American Minority Basketball Assoc. ( nonracist white guys would be welcomed though)…..

  10. Ennix says:

    LOL Whitey….yeah real funny.

There is a wikipedia page on this too now…shocker.

  11. Billy says:

why is it so wrong? it is for UNDER-REPRESENTED PEOPLE, this is the basis for every other special interest group, why not this one?

BET, NAACP, Grambling……….? we can on for years

If some don’t like it, don’t go and don’t watch, just let the people who do who want to

if it would be such bad quality, then don’t pay attention, this will benefit you

it’s perfectly fine for birds of a feather to flock together, except if that flock is white?

it would be good business, an untapped money maker, people identify with people who are like them, you hear it all the time from black, brown and yellow people, it doesn’t mean they are racists it means they have something in common

this is obviously a joke, but in reality, why not?

seems like a double, triple and quadruple standard

  12. Jeff says:

The league no doubt is racist. But then so are many of the posts on this thread that go beyond criticizing their roster prohibitions to casting white males as incapable of playing a meaningful, entertaining basketball game.

White males dominated basketball and sold out arenas up until sports became integrated in the 60′s and 70′s which is when they soon became a minority due to the ability of African Americans to jump and run better.

Blacks and people of color would call me all sorts of racist if I pointed out that while whites may not be able to, in general, run and jump as well as blacks they do have higher IQ scores and score better on standardized testing in schools. And while the argument may be made that these tests are “culturally biased in favor of whites” then please explain why Eastern Asians consistently score higher than whites on the same tests.

The races are different there is no doubt. And basketball benefits by it’s diversity (can you imagine the NBA if it never had Larry Bird, John Stockton, etc.), but to sit up here and call the AABA racists and simultaneously flame its members as morons who are incapable basketball players because they are white is even stupider.

  13. Lenny66 says:

White men can’t jump !!! This is hilarious. I have a name suggestion for the playoffs. The Trailer Trash Roundball Tourney.

  14. Josh says:

Anyone taking this story seriously is a complete dumbass…. its a hoax. All you brothas just settle down now.

  15. justice naczycz says:

why is race such a magnet for internet commenting. I mean I understand that it stems from a continuing problem in our society that sparks a lot of emotion, but is that the only thing people on the internet get worked up about? Overstating a little but not much.

  16. Ennix says:

GOod question Justice. Why do people try to use BET, Grambling and others as an example for race only.

This billy idiot really thinks that Grambling is ALL black? I been to Grambling and there are plenty of white folks on that school. Just how ignorant is the US, well Billy leads the race here in that department. Grambling is called a Historical BLACK college, nowhere in its name does it say “ALL BLACK” college.

This is the problem with our society.

  17. Tim says:

I know the flaming will start. But if you really put aside emotion, political correctness, and your white guilt or black racism, what is truly wrong with this idea?

The NBA and even NCAA is being completely dominated by African-Americans. Nothing wrong with that…at all. But I stopped watching the NBA a long time ago because of the change to the style of play that inevitably has evolved due to more athletic and freelance players. It’s not a product I enjoy to watch.

So why is it so offensive for a private citizen to organize a league to offer an outlet for white players (who are vastly under-represented in the NBA) to play professional basketball? If the tables were turned, would there be such an outcry?

I for one, would give the league a try. I enjoy fundamental basketball that stresses passing, picks, and execution of surgical plays…and good outside shooting. Maybe it would fail. But I say good for Mr. Lewis finding a market that needs to be addressed.

    Let the flaming begin.

  18. GC says:

the problem is that claiming “fundamental basketball that stresses passing, picks, and execution of surgical plays” is more likely come about via an All-White league is racist all by itself. Why not advocate a league for players 6’5″ and shorter? The league’s very name is offensive — what’s unamerican about being non-white?

“So why is it so offensive for a private citizen to organize a league to offer an outlet for white players (who are vastly under-represented in the NBA) to play professional basketball? If the tables were turned, would there be such an outcry?”

If the white players are vasty under-represented, that’s purely down to quality of play. No NBA owner or GM is going to exclude a qualified player because he’s white.

  19. db says:

I am trying to remember the last time I saw Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Lebron, etc. grabbing their crotch on national tv. What an idiot. Also white guys grab their crotch and sag their pants. Duh.

  20. J says:

There is no reason why any person should be told that they cannot play in a league just because of race. Hoax or not, this raises an interesting point. There should just be a zero tolerance policy against all of the violence and drugs in pro sports. You get caught – you’re out. The end. No excuses. No silly fines.
The problem is that it won’t happen because pro sports know that drama brings viewers.

Anyway, if you want to watch a white sport, you could watch Hockey.
