…was giving David Wells the stop sign as the Sultan Of Sloth rounded third base as David Ortiz singled in the 4th inning. To what extent Wells’ adventures on the basepaths left him too tired to compete far into Boston’s 12-8 defeat of Philadelphia, I can’t say for sure. Brett Myers’ conscience will survive allowing a grand slam to Manny Ramirez, butallowing David Wells to make contact twice, however, that’s gonna haunt the Phillies’ starter to his grave.
Philadelphia managed to claw back from a 7-0 deficit, only to see Rheal Cormier serve up a 2 run shot to Jason Varitek (above), part of Boston’s 4 run 8th inning to seal the deal. After vaulting their way into the NL East race, the Phillies have now dropped 5 of their last 6.
I did see on the tv where Myers mouthed something like “How the fuck that that get outta here” after giving up the pop-fly grand slam off the end of Mannys bat and he was quoted as saying that that was an out in any other park. True, but he didnt seem to have an explantion on why the bags were loaded to begin with and Jon Lieber doesnt seem to have an explanation on where his missing sinkerball may be. The Phillies are at risk of permament Rockies status unless they pull fences/walls/homeplate back at CBP and eliminate at least the cheapest of these dinked and line-drive doubles-turned-HRs. Even after the 2-3 years its going to take the next Phillies GM to totally undo Ed Wades damage and have some money to work with, top-flight pitching FAs will pass or only come to Philly if markedly overpaid and pitching prospects will have to be limited to groundball pitchers….Anyway, I think I’m going to pussy out on coming to Shea this week or make it Tues nights game as I really dont want to be at the game where the Mets put the Phillies back in the cellar.
presumably the visiting pitching staffs have to deal with the same dimensions at CBP, or am I missing something?
One more note on this weekends massacre- The Philly fans were remarkably stoic in their response to having both the Red Sox team and their fans take over CBP, with the only overt hooliganism being directed at a few folks sporting Patriots jerseys.
Gerard- Yes, the Phillies do get their crack at and share of cheap jacks, but I am talking in terms of the team being hampered by having a park that is so unattractive to future pitching FAs that they will be at a distinct disadvantage when competing with other teams for their services. Players will go for the $$$ and opportunity to get a ring but they do love their #’s also
Chuck,
I don’t know about that. Mike Hampton, for instance, he’s all about the school systems.
True. The lure of cheesesteaks and prospects of being in the right place at the right time to catch any Sadistic Exploits or Homo Picnic
reunion shows may be worth the 3-4 year spike in a pitchers ERA.
