Rinus Michels, RIP

Former Netherlands manager Rinus Michels, often credited as the creator of “total football”, has passed away at the age of 77.

Michels led a Holland team that included Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten to victory at Euro ‘88, along with a 2nd place finish in the 1974 World Cup. Michels’ CV also included a European Champions’ Cup with Ajax in 1971, and the La Liga title as Barcelona manager in ‘74. As a player, Michels scored 120 goals for Ajax in 14 year career spanning from 1946 to 1958.
