Russo Questions Sanchez’ Credibility

Posted in Baseball, Sports Radio at 5:36 pm by

One heck of a performance by WFAN’s Chris Russo this afternoon. Not only has the Mad Dog wondered about Duaner Sanchez’ “poor judgement” in ending up in a taxi wreck late Sunday night, but Astoria’s biggest (only?) SF Giants fan has pointed out “we don’t even know for sure he was looking for a Dominican restaurant.”

“Dominican restaurant”, is after all, Russo code for crack den, strip club, Omar’s Copacabana Where Talented White Men Are Given Their Walking Papers, etc.

Russo’s listeners, thankfully, aren’t buying such innuendo. “What about Tom Glavine?” (another cab crash casualty) asked one reasonable soul.

“TOM GLAVINE WAS TRYING TO GET HOME TO HIS FAMILY!!” screamed Russo. “HE WASN’T OUT AT THREE IN THE MORNING!”

It clearly isn’t enough that Sanchez has suffered a serious injury during his breakout season. The reliever can now recover while hearing the drivetime host of The Mets’ flagship station trash his reputation.

  1. Russo’s always over the top, that’s his thing. He did smell a little old-fogieish on this, harping on the late hour. But the excuse does sound dubious. 5-star hotel with 24-7 room service available. He had gotten in earlier in the evening. And they were 25 miles down 95 looking for this restaurant at 2-3 in the morning. You can’t indict anyone, but that’s definitely enough to raise your eyebrow for an extended period of time.

  2. GC says:

Room service food is kinda generic. If Duaner’s a “road food is good food” reader, why crucify him?

  3. Mike says:

Why does it even matter what he was doing at 3AM? There was no game on Monday. He’s a Latin guy in a city with a lot of Latino culture (food included) on his night off. If he was lying about looking for a restaurant (of which there is no evidence), SO WHAT?

And do we really know that Glavine was going home to his family on that ill fated ride??

  4. GC says:

Francesca, if you’re gonna continue to write in, the least you can do is sign your last name.

If I’m not mistaken, Glavine was in a cab with John Franco.  So I’m pretty sure they weren’t looking for a Dominican Restaurant. On their way to whack someone, perhaps, but almost certainly not going for Dominican food.

  5. David Roth says:

If I were a 26 year old Latin dude in Miami on an MLB salary, I’d be ashamed of myself if I weren’t out at 2am. Dominican food or no.

Sadly, I am 28 years old and the rest of that statement is also moot. I don’t even like plantains. Still, though, on this one, I’m with Mike. Especially if Mike thinks he would’ve been better off going to Manny’s Sports Bar and Restaurant in Moonachie, NJ. If it’s Francesa, he thinks that.

  6. n8genius says:

Please..spare me…I lived in Miami…the cabbies are on “meth” and everybody else drives like its the frigging Miami Grand Prix…no joke, except for the “bluehairs and the snowbirds” who drive at 20mph and provide the “road cones” to dart in and out off….so its definitely not Duaner’s fault… Russo is a sanctimonious blowhard imbecile who thinks he’s a tuff guy wiseass swinging his microphone like its his penis bollo…..He’s impossible to stomach and unfortunately, all we can do is shut his grating moronic diatribe off,… although it would be ultimately more satisfying to wrestle him Gracie jiu jitsu style and put him in a stranglehold while on the air so we could all hear his whimpering pleas…

  7. Rog says:

Breakout season? You mean he’s got a lot of pimples on his face? I think he did a lot of good pitching for a couple of years when he was with the Dodgers.

  8. GC says:

I meant he’s got a lot of pimples on his face.

No dis intented to Sanchez’ accomplishments in L.A., but he’s been key to the Mets’ success thus far in 2006 and represents a bona fide steal for the price of Jae Seo.

  9. Don S. says:

I also lived in Miami. There are plenty of places too eat that are ” open late”. Also Russo is A F***ING MORON. If he doesn’t have anything good to talk about he makes shit up. Anyone who takes pompous ass seriously needs to NOT listen to sports-talk radio anymore.

  10. beedlebaum says:

The best part was his claiming that “nothing is open at 2 in the morning in Miami!!” and having Ed Coleman tell him that Miami is, in fact, sort of a big city (“But it’s the off-season, Eddie!!”).. When Ed Coleman is hipper than you (despite your earlier claims about being “really into Tom Petty”), you should probably just hang it up.

Easily my favorite radio moment of the month. Of course it is only the 3rd.

  11. Rog says:

Russo looks like he’s taking a giant dump in that photo.

  12. Jerry says:

Mr Russo suggests that Mr Sanchez disappointed his Mom by going out after dark without calling her and asking her for permission … didn’t realize that a millionaire 25 year old with an day off needed to check in with Mom … if he had a workday scheduled it may have been inappropriate to go out but with an off day … it just something 25 olds do … Russo just had a slow sports news day and jumped on the Sanchez incident … Willie or Omar should tell him to shut up and not smirch Sanchez’s personal reputation … tennis anyone?? … that is all Russo is positie about

  13. Charles says:

Gothamist made a similarly stupid comment, calling Sanchez the “idiot of the day.”

Why an adult should be ripped for being out late before an off day is beyond me. Even if he was planning on rice and beans and rum and strippers, he was in a cab so it isn’t like he was getting behind the wheel drunk (n8genius’s take on the state of Miami cabbies notwithstanding).

  14. Alex says:

Russo is an idiot. He is only lucky Mike is there to keep the audience in tune. How many steroids is he on. I will bet you a dollar to a donut he would not say that to Willie or Omar. Big jerk I am glad he is the only giant fan in all of NY and NJ.
