Stern Lowers The Boom

Posted in Basketball at 2:07 pm by

I think we can safely say that ‘Melo’s MVP chances just took a (sucker) punch.  From NBA.com :

The Knicks and Nuggets organizations have each been fined $500,000 each as a result of the altercation.
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony has been suspended for 15 games.
Knicks guard Nate Robinson has been suspended for 10 games.
Nuggets guard J.R. Smith has been suspended for 10 games.
Knicks guard Mardy Collins has been suspended for six games.
Knicks forward Jared Jeffries has been suspended for four games.
Knicks center Jerome James has been suspended for one game for leaving the bench during an on-court altercation.
Nuggets forward Nene has been suspended one game for leaving the bench during an on-court altercation.

On behalf of Knicks fans, if not basketball lovers all over the world, I would like the Commissioner to know that I am deeply troubled by his leiniency.  Just one game for Jerome James?

The half million fine, presumably, addresses the allegations that Isiah Thomas specifically ordered Mardy Collins to go all goony.  I’m curious which will ultimately prove more costly for James Dolan — his team president’s judgement during a blowout loss, or his team president using the film “Love & Basketball” as part of his pick-up m.o.?

No suspension for Isiah, huh? Seems strange, since there’s all this talk about him having ordered the hit and whatnot. I guess you have to be 1) significantly older and crazier and 2) have Elijah Ingram do the honors in order to get in any trouble for that sort of thing.

had Thomas been suspended, can you imagine what a career killing fuck-you that would’ve been to Herb Williams? He’d get to take over a 9-16 team having to make do without n8, Jeffferies, and Collins, and there still wouldn’t enough chairs to go around. Even Aaron Heilman thinks Herb is badly treated by the organization

  3. David Roth says:

That Heilman line is great. At least he’d get to coach a game without Jerome James ordering personal pizzas to the end of the bench, though.

FWIW, leaving the bench is a cardinal sin in hockey.
    10 games at least.

  5. Charles says:

How does Nate score a shorter sentence than ‘Melo? Is a sucker punch really worse than a sucker tackle into the stands?

I still think that Isaiah will get suspended.

  6. GC says:

N8′s punishment is reduced becuz the Commish, like me, is a huge Randy Newman fan. When considering that Robinson’s “got no reason, no reason to live” why would David Stern rub it in?
